SEO in Portsmouth and Southsea
The island city searches by district. Be the answer in yours.
Two hundred thousand people on and around Portsea Island, and Google's map centres on wherever they are standing: Southsea, Fratton, Cosham, Gunwharf. We get Portsmouth businesses into the map pack for their district and into the results for the searches that end in a phone call, with a profile that ranks, pages that answer the local question, and reviews that keep coming.

How Portsmouth searches
One city, four map centres, and a seafront that searches on its own
A search from a phone in Southsea, in Fratton, at Lakeside and in Gunwharf Quays gets four different map packs. Add Fareham, Gosport and Havant across the water and a Portsmouth business is competing in seven small markets, not one big one. That is the whole shape of SEO here.
01
The map, by district
Emergency plumber, dentist near me, bar open now. Decided by your Google profile and where the phone is. A Southsea address wins Southsea and loses Cosham; the service area and the pages decide the rest.
Local SEO in Portsmouth02
The considered search
Loft conversion Portsmouth, conveyancing solicitor Portsmouth, boat engineer Gosport. People read, compare, and ring two. Won by a page that answers that search better than the directories and the Southampton firms do.
SEO in Portsmouth03
The adverts
Whoever is searching this minute, at a price per click that is higher here than in most of Hampshire because the city is dense. Worth it for urgent searches while the profile and the pages settle.
Google Ads in PortsmouthWho we work with
Three kinds of Portsmouth business, three different searches
A naval city with a seafront, a harbour full of boats and a dense grid of terraces: the businesses here sell to tourists on Southsea Common, to homeowners in Copnor and North End, and to boat owners from Gosport to Chichester Harbour. Each has its own page, written from what Search Console shows for that sector.
Hospitality
Southsea bars and restaurants, cafes, hotels, guest houses, the seafront.

Real numbers, from Search Console
The method, measured on another dense town
A trade business in a city with a crowded map, new site launched in July 2026: profile first, then pages, then reviews. The figures are Google's own, thirty days against the thirty before, read in late August. Portsmouth's map is at least as crowded, so the timeline is the honest comparison, not the percentages.

How it works
Four steps, and a timeline that respects how crowded the map is
01 · Week 1
Audit
Your profile, your site, your reviews and the three Portsmouth businesses above you in each district that matters. Plain English, a fixed quote, free.
02 · Weeks 2 to 6
Fix the profile and the site
Categories, services, hours including Sundays on the seafront, photos of the real place, review routine. Titles, indexing, speed, the pages that are missing.
03 · Month 2 onward
Build every month
A new service or area page, mentions on the directories Portsmouth uses, review replies, profile posts, the Fareham or Gosport page when it is earned.
04 · Every month
Measure and report
Search Console and Analytics read by a person who knows the districts. A short monthly report: what changed, what it did, what is next, what we refused to touch.
Profile changes show in weeks. Reviews build over months. New pages take three to six months in a city this dense. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is describing a search nobody makes.
Who you are dealing with
A named person, public prices, and a phone that gets answered
Portsmouth SEO is run by Daniel Stoychev, a developer and SEO specialist who builds the sites, reads the Search Console data and writes the reports himself. No account managers, no offshore content farm, no dashboard in place of a conversation.
- One person owns your account from audit to report
- Your enquiries are handled under UK GDPR; the business details are on the privacy page
- Pricing on the website, the same for every business in the city
Things we will not do
- Build a page for every district from Eastney to Paulsgrove with the name swapped. Google filters them and they drag the real pages down.
- Buy links, buy reviews, or ask your mates for reviews.
- Promise a position. Nobody controls that; we control the work and we show you the numbers.
- Take your competitor as a client while you are with us.

How Portsmouth businesses get found online: a city of small maps
Where enquiries come from in a city of small maps: the map pack by district, the results, the assistants.
Google Business Profile for a Portsmouth business: the district version
The Portsmouth profile field by field: category, services, hours, the district as people type it, photos, reviews, and what gets a profile suspended.
Why your Portsmouth website gets no enquiries, and what fixes each cause
A live but silent Portsmouth website usually has three of eight faults: nothing indexed, one page for everything, no district named, slow on a phone.

Open Competitor WatchQuestions Portsmouth businesses ask us
What is different about SEO on an island?
Distance. Portsmouth is the most densely populated city in the country outside London, packed onto Portsea Island with the mainland suburbs across the creek, and Google's map centres on the searcher. A business in Southsea appears for Southsea searches and rarely for Cosham ones, whatever its website says. The plan for most clients is one strong base on the island plus honest pages for the towns off it you genuinely serve.
Do you cover Fareham, Gosport and Havant?
Yes. They are separate map centres with their own competition, six to nine miles away, and a Portsmouth business that really works there gets a page for each that says what it does there. Not a copy of the Portsmouth page with the town swapped.
What does one business per trade mean?
We take one plumber, one dentist, one restaurant in Portsmouth on the Local and Growth tiers, because we cannot honestly push two rivals for the same searches. Your trade is confirmed free in the reply to the quote form. If it is taken we say so and point you to someone we trust.
Is Southsea its own market?
For hospitality, yes. "Restaurants Southsea", "bars Southsea" and "breakfast Southsea" are searched as often as the Portsmouth versions and the map centres on the seafront. A Southsea venue's profile and pages say Southsea first and Portsmouth second.
How quickly will I see enquiries?
Profile fixes show within weeks. The Portsmouth map is competitive for trades because the city is dense and many profiles are kept; the results are usually won page by page over three to six months. We put a realistic timeline on every proposal and would rather lose a client who wants page one in thirty days.
Do I have to sign a long contract?
Three months minimum, because nothing meaningful shows in month one. After that it is monthly. If it is not working by month six, we will say so before you do.
